Essex and Wales collide when Gavin and Stacey fall for each other, taking their friends, family and baggage with them. With the exception of the walls shot on location in London in the first episode, the entire series was filmed in Wales, including the walls set in Essex. The house that was used as the home of the Shipmans (Gavin family) is located in Dinas Powys, a village 1 mile north-west of Barry, where the Wests (Stacey family) live. In the third series, Bryn and Gavin’s cars have completely different license plates than in the previous series. Gavin’s blue sax has changed from a T-reg (1999 model year) to an X-reg (2000 model year). Brin’s green Picasso changed from CV02 (model year 2002, registered in Cardiff) to HV54 (model year 2004, registered in Portsmouth). Obviously, these are different cars. It was a lovely, short film with minimal commitment that took me two or three days to read quickly. There is nothing stunning about it, it does not move mountains or change paradigms. Rather, it’s a character study of two (larger) families who came together, one from Wales and the other from England, after the couple got together and married. This is a light, fun and friendly film. I wish there were more such series, where each of the characters is kind, loving, sociable, thinks and expresses love to those in their life, despite their shortcomings. It is not innovative, but it is not artificial either. It’s an honest slice of life, and it’s charming. It’s not a laugh-out-loud farce, as is usually the case in British comedies, but rather character-driven. Highly recommended.
